The prominent themes of nature and fluidity are represented in this design concept through the visual style of magical realism. Nature is of great thematic importance, as it is one of Orlando’s most valued interests that brings them closest to achieving self acceptance and freedom. The recurring motif of the Oak Tree is central to this design, as it represents Orlando's core identity as a writer. The life and growth of the Oak Tree echoes Orlando’s life. They both change over centuries however they are integrally still the same.
Just as Orlando accepts that he is both man and woman, the set replicates this idea by being both natural and architectural. The Oak Tree anchors the set, creating the magical world of which Orlando explores. The branches construct the walls and its roots reach out towards the audience symbolising Orlando's self growth and the lasting impact of the story to contemporary audiences. The supporting characters guide Orlando through this journey and their figures subtlety draw relevance to the organic world by containing elements of fungi inspired intricacies, while also maintaining historical accuracy in the silhouette.
