PROJECT

ALCYONACEA

PAVILION

YEAR

2021

LOCATION

MELBOURNE

PROGRAM

RHINO7

This pavilion intends to communicate the effect of natural disasters through art. I was particularly influenced by the beauty and intricacy of coral. The name ‘Alcyonacea’ is a structure that is composed of soft corals.

With this pavilion, I aimed to highlight the intricate beauty of these invertebrates and create an installation that has a purpose to make the audience reflect on their impact on the environment.

Coral reefs are often concidered the ultimate keystone species. They only take up 0.0025 % of the earth's surface but are responsible for producing 50% of the earth oxygen and absorb nearly one-third of the carbon dioxide generated from burning fossil fuels. Unfortunately many people do not know the significance of this species, which makes my installation much more significant and important.

With the scale and design of this piece, I also intended to create a metaphor for how these ‘small’ living organisms have a large importance in the world.
